Why Environmentally Conscious Tree Surgery Matters And What to Look For in a Tree Surgeon
If you have trees in your garden, you already know they’re more than just plants. They’re shade in summer, shelter in winter, habitat for wildlife and — if you’ve lived with them long enough — a part of the character of your home and community.
So, when the time comes to call a tree surgeon, the question isn’t just who can do the job. It’s who will be the best custodian for my trees.
Here’s why that distinction matters more than most homeowners realise.
TREES ARE AN INVESTMENT, NOT AN INCONVENIENCE
It’s easy to think of tree surgery as a reactive service — something you call when a branch comes down in a storm or a tree starts growing a little too close to the fence. But the most valuable thing a good tree surgeon does isn’t removal. It’s prevention and preservation.
Regular tree surveys, crown reductions and precision pruning keep trees healthy, structurally sound and safe for years longer than trees that are left unmanaged or poorly maintained. A well-maintained mature tree adds genuine value to your property — research by CABE Space and the Forestry Commission’s Forest Research agency consistently shows that trees increase residential property values by between 5% and 18%, and UK estate agents confirm that properties on tree-lined streets attract stronger demand and sell faster than comparable properties without them.

Quality tree surgeons don’t see removal as the default solution. They see it as the last resort.
WHAT DOES ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS TREE SURGERY ACTUALLY MEAN?
It’s a phrase that gets used a lot. But what does it mean in practice?
For us at O’Neill Trees & Timber Ltd., it comes down to three commitments — what we call The Chainsaw Environmentalist Approach:
- Keep trees standing and thriving for as long as possible — every tree we assess gets a full evaluation before any work is recommended. If a tree can be saved, retained or improved, that’s always our first conversation.
- Realise end of life trees as a precious natural resource — when removal is necessary, we don’t see it as waste. Timber from removed trees is processed through our hardwood sawmilling operation into live edge slabs and reclaimed timber, giving the wood a second life rather than sending it to the chipper where possible.
- Reinvest in the local tree canopy for future generations — we actively support replanting and canopy restoration, because healthy landscapes depend on new trees as much as protected ones.
This is what it means to be a Chainsaw Environmentalist.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A TREE SURGEON
Not all tree surgeons are equal. Here’s what every homeowner should check before booking anyone to work on their trees:
Qualifications Look for NPTC or City & Guilds qualified arborists. These are the recognised industry standard qualifications for tree surgery and chainsaw operation in the UK. If a contractor can’t evidence their qualifications, walk away.
Insurance Any reputable tree surgeon should carry full public liability insurance. Working at height with chainsaws carries significant risk — make sure you and your property are protected before work begins.
British Standard Compliance All professional tree work in the UK should be carried out in accordance with BS 3998: 2010 — the British Standard for Tree Work Recommendations. This standard governs how tree surgery should be planned and executed. Always ask if a contractor what standards they work to. Also note, this 2010 version is due to updated as knowledge and best practice improves. Make sure your contractor is keeping current with best practice.
Protection Status If your tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a conservation area, any work requires consent from your local planning authority before it begins. A good tree surgeon will identify this immediately and guide you through the process — not ignore it.
Environmental Approach Ask what happens to the material after the work is done. A contractor committed to environmental responsibility will have a clear answer. Chipping everything on site and driving away is not the only option.
COMMON TREE SURGERY SERVICES FOR HOMEOWNERS
If you’re not sure what you need, here’s a quick guide to the most common tree surgery services and when you might need them:
Crown Reduction — reduces the overall size of the tree’s canopy while maintaining its natural shape. Ideal when a tree has outgrown its space or is affecting light to the property or encroaching upon your neighbours.
Crown Lifting — removes the lower branches of the tree to increase clearance above ground level. Often needed near roads, driveways or buildings.
Tree Pruning — selective removal of specific branches to improve the tree’s health, structure or appearance. The most common form of routine tree maintenance to clear buildings and infrastructure.
Hazardous Tree Removal — when a tree poses a genuine safety risk due to disease, structural weakness, safe removal by a qualified tree surgeon is essential.
Stump Removal — after a tree is felled, the stump can be ground out to below ground level, allowing the area to be replanted or landscaped.
Emergency Tree Surgery — storm damage, fallen trees and sudden structural failures don’t wait for office hours. A responsive emergency tree surgery service is essential for homeowners in exposed or wooded locations in close proximity to trees.
